Thanks Sergei,

I suspected the problem was introduced, as it wasn't there before the chains were done. This was an OEM kit that was used. I've since looked at them on eBay and there's kits being sold with the two different gears! I'm kicking myself on this. I stripped the chains off and threw them away before I got the new ones trying to save some time!

Luckily it's my car. I bought it for £100 with a suspected head gasket. It was the balance shaft chain tensioner that failed causing the chain to come off the crank gear and so wasn't driving the water pump!

Still smiling though. I'm happy that my troubleshooting is way better than it has been over the years. All thanks to Paul's channels and book!

Hi Doc!

Thanks for the words of support!

I can't be too disappointed in myself. I've basically got crossed information on two very similar engines, using pretty much all the same parts except the exhaust gear cam gear.

A couple of hours work ahead, but a valuable lesson has been learned as to why we should always compare new parts with old.

Just read this thread, good stuff! The real wisdom here was recognizing a problem, instead of glossing over it and installing more parts as a result.

Out of curiosity, was the only difference between the intake and exhaust cam gears the presence of a sensor reluctor? Looks like the tone wheel is machined into the face of the gear itself.

Hi Tyler!

Thank you for your support! :-)

Both kits for this car are the same in every way apart from the exhaust cam gear, although I'll double check this. I was sent the wrong one. I have attached photos of both kits. You'll notice that in one kit the cam gears are the same. It was this kit that was sent to me. The other kit has a very different looking cam gear, much thicker looking! This is the correct gear. You can actually tell by the machined surface by what this gear does.

Thanks.

I've taken a screen grab of the other variant of this engine so you can see where the confusion was. This is from a video that's on YouTube. I hope it's ok to post this.

No problem there, sir!

Always easier to see the differences in hindsight, right? I'm bad about comparing parts carefully before installing, gotten myself in trouble many times. Why do I never learn

Nice diagnosis in the end Paul.At least you did not listen to the usual "it needs an ecu" brigade. This is why not throwing parts at it and testing first saves money and headaches.(Paul scanner danner's ) video's and book are a must for anyone wanting to troubleshoot and understand the workings and not just guessing at what could be wrong.I'm learning all the time and enjoying it in the process.
