my neighbor has a 92 honda civic hatchback with a acura tsx engine and rsx ecu and with a dead cylinder.after doing cylinder drop test we found cyl 2 was not contributing,we quickly found the injector had no control from ecu and no spark on number 2,we swapped coil over to cylinder one and that number 2 cyl now had injector control and spark so number 2 was now good and number cyl now has dead cylinder so it looks like a new coil pack will be the fix and a dead coil pack causes the ecu to actually shut down injector control?

my question is,is this a common strategy of ecu or is this more a honda strategy?i assume this is to prevent cylinder washing.

i was almost down the path a either open control wire or bad ecu till we swapped the coils around as i didnt think a bad coil would cause a injector control issue

Hey boostedsil40! Your neighbor seems to have a classic case of intentional shutdown. If you're a Premium member, this video is perfect:

This is a somewhat common strategy? But exactly how quickly the ECM/PCM will shut off the injector will vary widely based on YMME. Each manufacturer will have their own thresholds for injector shutdown. Sometimes they're published in service info? Usually they're not. :silly: Likewise, some manufacturers provide data PIDs or fault codes to help identify an intentional shutdown.

One of the more unusual variations on intentional shutdown is Dodge/RAM trucks. They'll shut down injector pulse AND spark.

Cylinder wash is a concern, sure, but I believe the main reason is for catalytic converter protection.

You would not have been the first person to go down that particular rabbit hole.
