I have a 2003 Dodge Durango 4x4 with a 5.9 l engine
On cold mornings I get in and start my vehicle and I'm going down the road with the load on with the lights heaters especially in the winter time a message comes on the dash it says check gauges and I look down in my gauge is that completely zero no no voltage going into the battery I can shutit off put it in neutral and restart the engine and then and it'll come back on and charge

That may be a side effect of the air intake heaters running during a cold start. They consume a ton of current, and it's typical for the alternator to fight to keep up after a cold start. When you shut it off and restart the engine, the heaters may not run again, thus the symptom changes.
If you disconnect the air intake heater relay and try another cold start, does the problem happen again?

Does your car feature a Cummins engine with the grid heater to whichTyler is referring to (I believe) or does it have a gasoline engine (LA?)?
If you let the engine run without restarting does the charging system actually work while the gauge stays at zero and will the gauge after a while finally read ok or is the restart procedure required to get the gauge back to normal?

I have a varis scope and I did a bi-directional test on the alternator I think it was a Ads circuit it said it was not turning on and off properly
