Hey Robert!
I don't have any specific info about this car (if you post the year someone may be able to pull up some service info), but I'm willing to bet it's a VRS type sensor that generates it's own voltage.
I'd start by checking live data if you have a scan tool that will display transmission data.
Next I'd want to check the actual signal at the sensor and at the PCM.
This video should give you a good idea of how to check the circuit:

Hi Noah...thank you for taking your time. This is a neighbors car. I found the tranny almost dry of transmission fluid and I believe it had been driven like that for time so one can just imagine what might have happened inside the tranny ! Funny thing is MB dont have dipsticks in their tranny, at least for the newer models, after 2003 or thereabout. Had the following DTC's ; (1) PO974, PO720, PO793, 00D2/00D4 (readout fault memory of control unit CVT), PO722 and PO896...have not done any wiring integrity as Idont have a diagram and not familiar withMB esp their DTC description. But I will watch your video. I will keep you posted. Thanks once again.

Hi Noah...AFter filling up tranny gear oil, it shifting work well for a few minutes. I checked integrity of of wiring from PCM to 3-wire sensor and all feed, ground and signal ok. My feeling is shift solenoid is the problem.I recommended it need to be serviced by the dealer(dash showed message "transmission need service soon"). Owner decided against it and wants to get rid of the car.
So I guess I consider this case CLOSE...
