Watched several of your videos, and I've seen you diagnose many of these issues and I've searched videos trying to find a way to find my own answer but I'm at a loss. I have a 2012 Nissan Xterra that decided to not start day. Cranks like crazy, just wouldn't start. Checked fuel pump for noise, checked cables, decided that it could be low voltage and I jumped it off and started. Drove it several times, shut it off and it hasn't started yet. Went through several steps. Starter fluid in intake, no start. Checked injector pulse, seemed normal. Checked for spark on coil packs, no spark. Assumed, crank position sensor as that will sometimes not throw a code. Nothing. Check voltage on each coil pack, all getting 12 volts and 5 volts. Replaced ignition relay, battery, terminals, took every ground in engine compartment and cleaned each one and replaced. checked every fuse. Hooked a Snap-on Tritan scanner to it. No codes, no stored codes. Says CANBUS communication error. Connects to every system but when we connect it to the transmission or the engine and to start the engine, it loses communication with the scanner. ECM's rarely go bad. I sent to the Nissan stealership and they have it two weeks and cannot fix it. Nissan tech support says it has jumped time but no one agrees with that. It has to be electrical. Me and four mechanics are at a loss on this one. I bought this car for my daughter and se turns 16 in two months, I really want to get it running for her. Have any suggestions?

I did not check the 5v while cranking. I will have to try that. The security light Flashes as it should. I did un-program the keyfob and then reset it just to make sure. I spoke to Nissan stealership again this morning. They have given up.

If it had jumped time, they (or you or one of these mechanics) should do an in-cylinder pressure test and confirm that theory. However, before I did that, I'd make sure you are getting pulses on the injectors and on the coils. Check the fuel as well for contamination.

As Monde points out, you need to resolve the canbus error. Check for the 60ohms resistance between hi and low bus.

I am working on getting towed back home so I can do these tests. I will update as soon as I get it back. Thank you so much for the help!

Ok. Got the car back from Nissan. What a horrible experience.

Getting a OL code when I connect to 4 & 16. All other connections are showing ohms when they shouldn’t be. Pretty sure that’s a short somewhere?? Not sure how to locate the specific issue. I’ve looked for maybe a chewed through wire somewhere maybe. Also started unhooking sensors and connections one at a time but no change...crank, no start. The only one that had a different result was when I plugged the connection at the transmission. Wouldn’t turn over at all. Just the lights on the dash came on. No click, nothing. I’ve called three other repair shops. They don’t want to even tackle it. Said they don’t have the capability to track this kind of issue because it requires a “Nissan computer”. Surely this isn’t a lost cause ordering a scanner and a breakout box. Never used before but will see what happens.
