I imagine you could just sniff it like you might with milk from the fridge? :P

Well trying to make some sense of it I imagine there are some ingredients/softeners that will vanish, just like you wouldn't want to mount (new?!) tires with an expired shelf life...It´s the only thing I can come up with.
