99 Cummins dead pedal was created by Cummins guy
So I got a 99 dodge Cummins 24 valve and every now and again when you crank it up and take off in it after about a mile the pedal will go dead nothing at all to the floor and truck just idles…you cut it off and crank it back up and immediately goes great…it’s my dads truck …he already replaced tps sensor….no check engine light….and it only does it every now and again…although he said one time it did it everyday for a week straight…has fuel pressure gauge and it doesn’t loose any fuel pressure when this problem occurs…it’s automatic…...any help is appreciated

Which side of the fuel system did you check? Lift pump side or high pressure fuel rail side?

With it just idling with pedal pushed down like that makes me think the app sensor has a power/ground issue or it's derating the engine due to a pump issue/ wiring issue. Do you have any codes for scv valve or anything else?

I was thinking the same thing …he said he replaced the tps sensor already but no change…I checked the lift pump side right on top of the fuel bowl…there is no codes present….

Is your hi pressure fuel pump a vp44 and did it have a in tank lift pump installed as well or does it have the external lift pump? Also what was pressure for lift pump side? Was it 10-15psi

It has the original engine mount lift pump and it’s a fass lift pump it was 15-17 psi

Ok it should have a electrical connector on it. Check pins for pin drag and corrosion. If ok then use a wiring diagram to identify the accelerator pedal input wire. With it being intermittent a loose pin or partially broken wire is what I would look for with that wire.

If the prior lift pump failed and the drive for a while on a bad lift pump there is a possibility it over heated but with the symptoms you have I don't believe that would be the issue as it seems like the accel. Pedal position sensor feed is dropping out causing it to go to idle.

So if I check the voltage dropping out and everything is good…how can you check the vp to see if it’s bad?

It would involve disassembly of the pump to see if diaphragm ruptured. But it would only cause a no start condition if pump failed however the electronic component that's part of the pump is where I would focus that part would have to be taken apart to where you can see the electronics . And look for a solder joint cracked or burned component.

So It finally tru a code of 0216 which is I’m assuming is the code of death for the vp….any way I could confirm that the pump is going bad or is that code pretty much it?

Ok that code does not necessarily mean the vp44 is dead. That code can mean a number of things like a failing lift pump, a restriction in fuel filter, in fuel tank restriction, a loss of fuel pressure on acceleration like a bad lift pump, timing for vp44 pump needs adjustment if possible, a bad vp44 pump.

So when engine is running with fuel pressure gauge attached watch gauge while stepping on accelerator. Does fuel pressure drop when attempting to accelerate? If yes you have a possible restriction (fuel filter, in tank restriction, or bad lift pump)

If pressure stays same / increases but vp44 does not respond look at vp44 to be bad.

I will add to this tomorrow.

Ok yes he has a bran new fass 150 and never drops below 10psi at wot…he did say about 4 years ago when he didn’t have a fuel pressure gauge the stock lift pump went out and he drove like that for a long time he says with a bad lift pump….then he put a gauge and the fass 150…been running good ever since until now…when he first cranks it it has a dead pedal and he says he can cut the truck off and crank it right back up and it will run fine all day he said…just on start up seems like….

I’ve never replaced the vp44 it doesn’t have to be timed does it? Ain’t it just a bolt off and bolt on pump?

It will need to be timed as that gear that is part of it has to be lined up with other gears precisely in time with camshaft
