[FIXED] Change ECU No DTC codes, With Crank and Fuel Pressure no start/no Spark was created by tatlogis
2005 Toyota Vios/Yaris Manual (PHL market)
2NZ FE Engine
hey guys, I have been trying to repair my car for the past few weeks. We had a very rainy days this past weeks here in the Phils. My car was park outside and unfortunately rain water has found its way inside the car but it was not flooded. When I tried to start the car it wasn't Starting but it has crank, so I tried to figure out what was wrong. I checked the ECU and found out that rain water has damage it. I tried to test spark and fuel also, the fuel pump wasn't working but all the spark plugs produces spark. I bought a second hand ECU (tested the replacement ECU on an exact model of the car), replaced the ECU hoping it would solved the issue. When I tried to start the car with the new(replacement) ECU I notice the fuel pump noise but the car wouldn't start. I checked spark and there was none. I was wondering if it's a bad crankshaft position sensor, there are no DTC codes. The fuel pump is working, it has fuel pressure based on the OBD scantool. But somehow I lost spark. Is it safe to say that if I have fuel pumping the replacement ECU is good? And the no spark problem comes from the crankshaft sensor? Why didn't the ODB scantool pickup any troublecodes if the crankshaft sensor was faulty?

Unfortunately, we don't get the 2NZ in the US. But we do get plenty of the 1NZ. I'm just gonna hope/pray that they're pretty similar. :silly: I can't remember ever seeing a bad crank sensor on one of these engines.
Before digging in much further, I'd suggest testing for injector pulse. If you're missing injector pulse AND spark, then we can go after inputs. If you have injector pulse but no spark, then I'd suspect the inputs are OK.
Does the fuel pump continue to run during cranking?

Just thinking logically. If ecm A produced spark but does not activate the fuel pump and ecm B activates fuel pump but no spark then logic tells me that the crankshaft sensor is good. Ecm B worked in another car.
Put ecm A back in. Does the ignition spark return? If so, I'm thinking ecm B is hooked up wrong or incorrect for your car.
Moisture can cause many problems. Possible moisture in wiring connectors at ecm?

Being wrong doesn't bother me, it's being right and not understanding why that does

Hey Guys, I finally got my car working again. I forgot to mention that I have replaced the crankshaft sensor before I got the ECM B. I have put back the old crankshaft sensor with the new ECM B and the car started. I'm still confused why did the OBD scanner didn't detect the faulty replacement crankshaft senor? I'm just using a cheap OBD scan adapter which uses a mobile/cellphone App to use(Torque).

Great to hear it's up and running.
Like I said, we don't get that engine in the US. But, just for giggles, I went and looked up crank sensor code set criteria for an '05 Toyota Echo. Closest thing I could find to your Vios/Yaris in the US market. :silly:
P0335/P0339 will only set if the starter is cranking, battery voltage is less than 11V, and the crank signal is completely missing for 4.7 seconds or longer. Perhaps you didn't crank the engine long enough? Or, the replacement sensor was generating a signal, just not one the ECM could use. Faulty new parts can cause all kinds of strange problems...
