Ford Explorer stuck in park was created by gnx547
2010 Ford explorer wont shift out of park. This happened before a few yrs ago and the shift interlock module was bad. I'm thinking the module is bad because it's Dorman and usually doesn't last long.  The brake light switch is good, the brake lights do come on.

I'm moving the shift solenoid lever to by pass it so I can move the lever into gear. As I'm doing this the shifter won't move into gear. Does this sound like a shifter assembly problem? I should be able to bypass it but the shifter is still stuck in park. Any ideas?

I'd want to check some scan data first, before making a shifter call. Mostly I'd like to see what the BRK_SHIFT PID does with the key on and your foot on the brake. If it shows Active, I'd check power and ground at the shift interlock solenoid, then change it. B)

But you're saying that the shifter doesn't move, even when using the bypass? That almost sounds like a seized cable to me. If you pop the cable loose of the shifter, does it now move? If not, the problem is in the shifter.

I have an Actron scanner and not sure if it shows brake shift pids, but I'll check and see.

I'll remove the cable from the shifter and see if the shifter moves then. Thanks!

I disconnected the shifter cable from the shifter and I'm able to move the shifter when I bypass the shifter lever. Sounds like the shifter cable is bad or a problem with the transmission.

I'll disconnect the cable from the transmission and see if I can shift it by hand.

The transmission is a 5R55S. I disconnected the transmission cable from the transmission and I'm able move the shifter through the gears. I feeling no binding in the cable.

I tried to manually shift the transmission into gear from the lever on the transmission with my hand and it wont move out of park.

Could a bad transmission range sensor cause this?   I'm thInking if the sensor is bad I still should be able to manual shift the transmission into gear?

I'm thinking this is a transmisson problem and something internal is jammed up preventing it to shift out of park. Would you agree?

We rocked the vehicle several times and it did get out of park! The parking pawl is broken. When the shifter is in park it just rolls. I wanted to move the explorer now it won't start, no crank no nothing. What a headache!
