1999 chevrolet suburban 2500 5.7L Oil filter blew off
I don't think I have ever had this happen before. Last Thursday I changed the oil on my 1999 Chevrolet Suburban for the first time since I have owned it. When I went to remove the old oil filter I noticed it was only finger tight. There was a bit of oil leakage, nothing major at all. I spun the old filter off with my hand, inspected it to make sure all gasket material came off with the filter, which it did, and cleaned the mating surface with a clean rag and visually inspected. All looked good. I installed a new Purolator oil filter. I lubricated the gasket with clean oil, put it on to hand-tight then gave it another quarter turn with my oil filter wrench. Put in 5 qts of new 5w30 oil per the owners manual. Checked level, Started engine up, checked for leaks, all was fine. Drove it a few miles, checked again for leaks and oil level on the stick, all was fine. Friday through Sunday I drove the truck about 300 miles, all was fine. Today I was going to drive into town and got about a mile when I noticed my gauge was reading zero oil pressure. Turned around and coasted/drove gently home. As I approached home and down my driveway I could see the trail of oil. I had started with a big blowout spot and continued up my 100 foot driveway to the street, and then continued for most of the block. At first I could not find the oil filter, but then found it 3 blocks down at the side of the road. The gasket was intact, undamaged, and not loose or blown. Any thoughts on what could have caused filter to blow off?
Wow, never heard of that happening. I own a 98 Chevy K1500 with this same engine that I bought new and have never had that happen. I only tighten my oil filter hand tight and never use a filter wrench on it.
I can't imagine what would cause that to happen if you tightened it like you said.
