Peugeot 207 Crank no start was created by Gorrie
Hi all

I have a Peugeot 207 1.4vti 16v 2009 engine EP3 with a Crank no start.

I have ran diagnostic and came back with the error code P0368 which is pointing to the Camshaft sensor on the exhaust side.

I have checked the supply with ignition on and i'm getting 5v

I have check the Ground 0v

when I check the signal wire I'm getting 12v with the sensor out is this correct or should there only be voltage when sensor makes with camshaft ?

I have check for resistance from Signal wire to ECU Plug and get 0 ohms

Thanks in advance for any help

King Regards

Graeme

Hi everyone,

Gorrie. When I'm not sure about the kind of circuit I'm facing, I rather back probe the signal wire (sensor plugged).

If you slowly spin crank shaft by hand, you can see signal wire going back and forth between 0v and 12v.

If you crank it instead of spin it by hand, you can see an average voltage between 0v and 12v.

That was just for checking whether sensor is alive or not.

Crank no start could be cause because pcm is not getting the exact sequence of pulses from sensor/circuit/ckp wheel

i back probed the sensor when it was out and held a socket at the front of the sensor
i was getting 0V when socket was at sensor and 12V when i took it away so yeah would say the sensor is good.

I'm thinking my problem could be more possible timing chain has jumped a tooth and therefore making the cam out of sync to the other cam and crank sensors.

Thanks

Is there spark/injection?

There is injection as I can here the fuel pump priming and also when I removed the Spark plugs to check for spark there was fuel on them.

I think the problem is more spark side as when I ground the plugs out and crank engine over there isn't a constant spark I would say there is a spark every 8-10 seconds this is the same on all 4 spark plugs each spark plugs has its individual coil pack.

Thanks

After back probe cmp signal is getting pcm, my next move would be compare cmp/ckp sync with known good.

You can also take valve cover off and visually confirm misalignement.

Sorry i'm not quiet sure what you mean

Are you meaning now I know signal is getting back to pmc.

I should visually check cam alignment with cam cover off ?

I have timing locking tool coming tomorrow so thats what my plan was I am going to pin the crank and check to see if the cams were aligned.

That seems CMP sensor is alive (not 100% good, just alive).

Now you must confirm CMP circuit integrity, by checking that CMP signal is reaching ECU connector (back probing CMP signal in ECU connector meanwhile you crank or spin chankshaft as described).

You can check Camshaft/crankshaft correlation with cover off by visually confirm marks positions on camshaft sprocket/s if you don't have scopemeter neither camshaft/crankshaft correlation known good waveforms.

If you have good crankshaft/camshaft correlation, I would call CMP sensor.

I re scanned today and now have a few code all related to timing so think its more going to be a timing chain issue

Thanks for taking time to reply

If vehicle has vvt make sure those codes dont relate to it first. A phaser not working correctly can cause similar issues. Check to see if phaser wobbles while cranking engine or is stuck really advanced or retarded.

Hi Thanks for your reply

Are you classing the Phaser as the motor on the variable lift for the inlet cam it's like half a gear the controls the lift on the inlet cam ?

I have the Diagbox for Peugeot so I'm sure I can actuate it using the software if this is the area you are meaning

Thanks

I am not familiar with stuff from across the pond but from a engine parts breakdown pic i saw it had the phaser that bolts to the front of the camshaft. It should have an electrical solinoid that controls oil flow to it, in which you should be able to bidirectionally test with a scan tool that has those functions. So test solinoid first bidirectionally then unplug solinoid to see if it goes to zero/base timing while cranking. If not it could be solinoid is stuck and bleeding oil to phaser. To be sure though remove valve cover and hand turn crank to tdc #1 and check cam alignment marks. Just make sure its at tdc compression stroke. When it is the marks should line up if not check mechanical part of phaser for sticking (sometimes tapping it with a ball pein hammer will unstick it temporarily) it should rest in its neutral position (see service info in manual) if it is sticking or (if return spring is broken) it will turn by hand.
