hello everyone, i'm new to the Premium Channel but have watched Paul's youtube videos for years. i'm a Toyota tech been with toyota for 6 years now. love troubleshooting electrical issues but have a question. i recently purchased a 2011 Hyundai Sonata with the 2.4 GDI engine car was running great stopped last sunday and filled the tank. drove home about 20 miles started having a 1/2 second Stall while driving about every 5 mins on the trip home (felt like cutting the key off then right back on). pulled in driveway cut car off and fuel started running out off vent valve filter above Filler neck. let car sit for 30 mins while i got jack and stands out, removed inner rear fender wall to see where it was leaking from and thats when i found it leaking from vent valve filter. removed fuel cap and gas was just running out. started car after it stopped leaking out and found fuel flowing back in to filler neck from the vent that goes to top of tank to small steel tube line on filler neck. this side has no vent valve where the other side with the filter has a vent valve after charcoal canister. the side with out the valve had fuel coming out of it pushing back in to the filler neck causing the filler neck to get full and leak backout of the gas cap. i back up my driveway since its slopped and the fuel would still run out while car was running for awhile. didnt top gas tank off and it didnt leak at the pump. no Evap Codes or any codes for that matter Tested Vapor Canister and Vent valve Today and also did A Evap Purge and Seal All Checked Good. but the Issue with the gas leak and Engine Stall Feel has Not Happened since last sunday after i took it for a quick 2 min ride getting into it pretty hard and returning home to find filler neck was now empty. i was thinking vapor canister valve issue but like i said its working fine at this moment. has anyone seen this kind of issue before or have any other thoughts? thanks in advance. and i forgot to mention the fuel pump assembly (the low pressure Pump) was replaced 3,000 miles ago.

I can't say I've ever seen fuel run out of the filler or the vent the way you describe. Sounds pretty catastrophic! :silly:

I do see frequent problems with the vent valve and the vent filter, both of which are directly attached to the canister as you saw. Vent filter -> vent valve -> canister. It's gotten to the point that I recommend replacing both at the same time, even if I only have a problem with one or the other. Anything else is asking for a comeback.

Was there any visual evidence of the fuel tank getting sucked in?

Hey! I'm hoping you can see this because this post is literally the only post I can find with my issue. I bought my 2011 Hyundai Sonata almost 2 years ago and found out shortly after that when filling up my car fully, it'll run rough, spit gas out of the fuel filler, and literally turn off in the middle of the road. Did you ever find out what the fix was? I've been dealing with it because it doesn't happen after it gets to a half a tank and below but now its become annoying making multiple trips to the gas station a week. I hope you see this, Thanks!
