2006 Nissan Armada - intermittent loss of brakes

When I press the brake, it will make a metal on metal grinding sound that I can also feel in the pedal. The SUV will experience poor braking during this event. If I turn the SUV off and back on again, the brakes work perfectly again for another 5 to 6 months.

Sometimes when the brakes are working perfectly, I will see the SLIP and VDC lights come on. There is no check engine light.
