Navigator P0456 & P0442 was created by Live2Fish88
Hey guys. 2006 Lincoln navigator with the 5.4L 3V in it. I'm getting a fuel smell upon startup and maybe 5 min in to the ride, more noticeable with the heat on. I have a smoke machine as well as a bi-directional scan tool but I haven't been able to find the leak...I used the smoke machine on it via the purge valve lines on both sides but haven't used it with the scan tool (I just got it not too long ago). What are your thoughts and what's the simplest approach to finding this leak?

I find on a lot of Ford vehicles that the purge sticks intermittently. Just experience. I would start with a vacuum gauge and cycle the purge solenoid on and off and see if you can catch it sticking.

Purge valve wasn't holding vacuum when I originally checked it so I replaced it (about a month ago). But the problem persists.

Did you check to see if any charcoal was in the line?
Try an evap purge and canister vent while monitoring in tank pressure. Pretty sure the voltage should be at about 2.5v for fuel pressure sensor. Close canister vent valve, Use purge to pull it into a vacuum till the pressure sensor drops about 1v then turn off the purge valve and see if it continues to build vacuum. Should really help narrow down where your problem is.

I'll try that. The part that's got me stumped is the fuel smell under the hood coming into the cabin. Makes me think leak is in engine compartment.
