[SOLVED] Bad Fuel Pump Waveform? was created by rockp2
This is a replacement AC Delco fuel pump that was put into my '98 Chevy Blazer ZR2 4.3L Vin "W", 5-speed manual trans, also I have done the MFI upgrade. Fuel pump was purchased from Rockauto at the same time I was doing a long block "new" reman engine change. Engine purrs at idle and truck drives well. However when putting load on the engine going up a hill have to downshift and keep pedal to floor to stay around 55mph. Has been like this since the swap was done and new pump installed. Fuel pressure is below spec (55psi instead of 60-66psi KOEO when key is first cycled) and then drops immediately to 50psi after pump shuts off. Pressure seems to hold fine for >10 minutes.

Now admittedly, the attached image is from my first use of hooking my Vantage Pro up to Shop Stream Connect, so I'm giddy as a kid at Xmas about that :P But I have a couple question about the waveform. Now this was taken at idle with a SO Low Amp Probe on the fuel pump power wire. From the research I've done, it appears that my pump is bad? I'm getting mixed responses about how many amps should be drawn for this truck's fuel pump. Some say 6-8 amps and others (including the Vantage Pro instructions) say 8-10. Anyone know for sure which is it? If it's 8-10, well then the pump is definitely bad. Which sucks because it was like that from day 1.

Another question is just the waveform itself seems not level enough. I understand from research there will be some wave, but doesn't this seem too much? If so, then again, sucks. Lastly, everywhere I look it is discussed that Blazer fuel pumps have 8 commutators. Unless I'm counting wrong, I see 10. Would there be any issues with that? I don't see how, but I can't believe that a brand new AC Delco pump would have been bad straight out of the box. Any evaluations and insight to learn this newb are highly appreciated. Thanks!

I just happen to have a known good waveform for you :cheer:
This capture came from a 98 S10 Blazer after a new fuel pump was installed. Don't remember the brand. Kind of an older file. But should help.

Looks like your amperage is a little low and a lot more uneven.

Dude (Ro-longo), you ROCK! Now I can quit tearing my hair out thinking "It can't be the fuel pump....it was a brand new Delco." Guess, it is the pump. Thanks much!
