3vze Engine Rebuild, now NO SPARK was created by Clockworkmotors714
Hello, my issue is related to my frustrating 1993 4Runner. She was on her last leg and I couldn’t bear to watch her leave this world; sold to the nearest pick-a-part for penny’s on the dollar. All the years hauling dead weight over mountains just to be picked apart from the inside out in an automotive convalescent home.
Sorry about that.... i completely overhauled the 3vze, compression is now great, the timing marks are lined up, fuel pressure is within spec, yet there is no spark coming from my ignition system.
I have watched scanner danners videos on bypassing the ecu to verify correct igniter operation and sure enough I got spark when I jumped with a test light.
I even went to the yard and picked up a used distributor, igniter, coil, but as the igniter tested well I won’t touch a thing.
I monitored the tachometer needle and do not have any pulsation when cranking which makes me think the IGT circuitcould be the culprit if not just one of the culprits.
Just for my amusement I switched my DMM to A/C voltage and measured the “NE” & “G” circuits directly off the distributor.
What surprised me was the “Ne” circuit jumped repeatedly while cranking, yet the “G” circuit did nothing. You think it could be a bad cam sensor in the distributor?
I am at a lost with this car and wish I could figure the issue out so I can drive it. It’s been months.

Yesterday I was reading the “engine control” section in the workshop manual and came across a section detailing the “ESA SYSTEM”. The acronym stands for electronic spark advance system and thus system monitors conditions using input signals from the engine coolant temp sensor, rpm signal system, TPS, air conditioning sw signal, intake air volume, sta signal system, and knock sensor.
I have been chasing multiple DTCs, all of which I just listed for a while now, I have replaced and adjusted the TPS twice, tested the vane flow meter, ect I can’t tell you how many times. I am 100% certain these sensors are OK. Yet, my ECU keeps flashing the same few dtcs, although not in the same orientation.

Do any of you guys have any idea what I’m dealing with. I’m very frustrated and will cry tears of joy if one of you mY know the answer. Thank you.

We'll have a better idea if you share the dtc's.

Getting involved in discussions because I have a lot to learn still.

I would put the distributor you picked up on and see, just sharpie the old distributor position to put it back on if its no good, I'd also swap the igniter and coils around in combinations, I've had where I've had one bad coil and one bad igniter in different distributors, until I happened upon both of them working properly, also had red dust of death bearing failure in 2 distributors
