fuel trims neg. 31% 2001 Dodge Ram van v8 5.2L was created by frankiedon450
Hi to all techs! 2001 Dodge Ram v8 5.2L w/ map engine. Fuel trims are going between 14 and 31% neg. and the evap. purge solenoid runs a long time. I have replaced the purge solenoid valve and the injectors. Is it normal for the engine to run rich while the evap purge is happening, and how long should the purge solenoid operate? also, can a bad charcoal canister cause a rich condition? Happy New Year 2020. Thanks for any help. Frank.

Does it run bad? Do you have scan data on the purge valve duty cycle? If it reads 0% and still purging possibly it’s stuck open or shorted to ground control wire. Have you checked fuel pressure? Coolant temp sensor?

Hi Cheryl. My scanner is not sophisticated enough to check the duty cycle, the coolant sensor is reading normal and it was replaced, although some years ago. I don't have a fuel pressure gauge yet so I have no means of checking that; are you thinking that the fuel pressure may be too high? I replaced the fuel pump a year ago because the amperage was too low and the van is nearly 20yrs. not because of this problem. the shorted to ground part you mentioned: maybe I can check that if I can remember how. I'm in Barbados where the weather is warm and it can be humid. The van sits in the hot sun for hours, so I wonder if that should make the evap.- system operate any differently from Florida weather where the van used to operate before. Thanks for your response . Frank
