2005 Hyundai Tucson 2w/d 2.0 motor. Have flushed and bleed out air in power steering pump. No leaks in rack/pinion or power steering pump. As long as you go straight no problem, it’s when you try turning left or right, impossible to turn. Have to stop and force the turn. But once it releases its ok till next turn.
I will check that out this week when weather clears up. I assume if the wheels up and the steering is free it could be joints? Is there a module under dash that might be an issue? Ok I will try the air in system then the joints. Will let you know. Thanks
I find it odd that steering while moving is difficult. Usually if you loose the power steering the wheel is more difficult to move at a stand still. Sounds like a mechanical binding issue.
You are correct and that is happening even pulling out of driveway. Then when I get ready to turn steering wheel with power it so hard it takes everything I have to get it to turn. But once straight forward easy , no binding. Thanks for reply.
The two main mechanical issues that cause binding are the universal joints or a bend in the rack.
Seized universal joints have quite a distinctive feel at the steering wheel only way to describe is the steering feels lumpy as it is turned
A bent rack will tend to feel stiffer as the steer approaches full lock --- usually only in one direction.

It feels lumpy in both directions. It usually begins when you first start turning in both directions and then it feels like it turns loose from binding. Hope that makes sense. Thanks
Belt tight, no oil on belt. I’ve vacuumed the system, it helped some, the knuckles not binding. Only thing that I haven’t done is replace the power steering pump. Thank you and others for the good tips.
I just drove a Dodge that needs an intermediate shaft and it made me think of this post again. Did you remove the shaft and flex the knuckles both ways? That's the only way you'd know if it's binding or not.
