When trying to fill the tank, fuel would back up in the filler neck and either overflow or kick off the pump. I disconnected the charcoal canister from the tank and it still wouldn't take fuel. I dropped the tank and discovered the vent lines were clogged up with charcoal bits.
Did the charcoal get in the lines because something in the canister failed, or is this something that just happens over time? If I turn the canister up, I can pour some charcoal out of it. Does the canister need replacing?
Yessir, a new canister is in order. Plus time to blow out, well, everything.
If you haven't already, disconnect the vapor line at the purge valve and see if any charcoal bits got sucked up towards the engine. If so, blow the line clean and replace the purge as needed.
