Hey guys I got a 05 dodge Durango with a 4.7 engine. I am not familiar with this engine at all. It has 2 broken timing chains that go to the OHC I read on the internet somewhere that it was NOT a interference engine so I told the garage owner that all it needs is a timing set. The customer finally gave the green light after about a month. I agreed to do the job for the shop owner because I need the money and he didn't want to get involved in tearing the engine apart, he just does basic repair work. I started to put the chains on and thought I better do a leak down test before I loose my ass on this engine. Well guess what both heads don't seal at all in the front 2 cylinders So the man says take the heads off. Before I do that can someone confirm that it is a interference engine because I read both now and I also just read that the rocker arms will bend before the valves do. Please give me your thoughts, The engine has 170k on it and I have worked on diesels and had cleaner hands when I was done, They NEVER changed the oil!!
The customer says the engine sounded good just before it quit.
Thanks

Nice call on doing the leak down test  I hate to say it, but you "dodged" a bullet on that one!

Everything I've read on these says these are indeed valve benders. I've also seen these heads fail in multiple different ways, like the valve seats falling out, lifter bores cracking, and rocker arms popping off (due to valve guide problems). Craptastic engines, IMO :(

If the oil is that bad, then I say you pull a few camshaft caps and look for bearing scoring. Maybe spin the camshaft while still in the head and look for worn cam lobes, too. If you see evidence of either, then I say recommend an engine.

 BAIL

Those motors are extra junk, and not easy to time.
