On my 1998 Ford ranger how does the charging system with a volt meter work compared to on with only a charge light.
Does anyone have a wiring diagram with the volt meter not the charge light

Are you sure your Ranger doesn't have a charge light? You don't see one come on during the KOEO bulb check?

From looking at the diagrams, it looks like the voltmeter has no input to the charging system directly. It just runs off the power and ground supplied by the instrument cluster:

The voltage checks at the alternator (if your Ranger isn't charging) are pretty straightforward:

Power at the heavy black/orange cable, power at the yellow/white at the regulator, ground at the alternator case.

What the light green/red wire should have depends on what the charge light is doing. If the light is off with the engine running, it should be within a volt of battery voltage. If the light is on, it should be one to two volts.
