European Cars & Their "LIVE DATA" was created by BLEE
Hello,

I work on many different brands of cars which are usually American cars. I can go to "live data" and read many different PID's, but when I work on some European cars like BMW, VW, & Audi I have a hard time finding the "live data" It seems that you have to input a "channel" number to get the live data that you are looking for? My question is is this true that you have to input a "channel" number to get the appropriate live data & where if any is there a list of channels to find the live data? I am using a Autel MS906BT scan tool as well.

Thank you,

Brian

Yes unfortunately - horrible channel numbers that you're supposed to know.
BUT: if you access them using eobd/obdII mode you will get the (limited) live data that obdII is required to provide the usual way, without having to enter channel numbers.

Getting involved in discussions because I have a lot to learn still.

Hi from Switzerland!

I use also a MS906BT and i work almost only with european cars.
In the Autel, there is most an Option for multiple Pids (channels) viewing.
I was always able to watch more Pids together, never had any Problems.
The Autel is a great tool for me, it never let's me down..

I sometimes refer to the Ross-Tech website for info concerning VW/Audi measured values. USUALLY the Snap-On scanner does a decent job of labeling the groups for me, but not always. :silly:

Hi,

it all depends on manufacturer, model and scantool!

Let us walk thru he most prominent make, VW/Audi as an example:
On a time line before UDS protocol they present ithe live data in MWB. Stands for Messwerteblock and means groups of parameter identifier.

These groups are referenced in the service manual and are consistent throughout (most) the manufacturer's different products:

MWB 0 to 9 would be general engi e data like rpm, temperature, load etc
MWB 10 to 19 would be ignition/misfire related like misfire counters, knock retard etc.
MBW 30 to 39 deals with fuel trims and A/F ratio stuff
MWB 90 to 99 is for VVT,
MWB 120 to 129 is CAN com

These ar just a few examples.

The logic behind this concept is similar to what for example GM does breaking it's engine data down to fuel trim data, misfire data, tac data, VVT data etc.

Some scan tools like the ROSS TECH VCDS will do a great job of deciphering and explaining these data to the unfamiliar user. Others like the cited Autel or Launch just copy and spit out the data in an unrelated manner. You would have to work with SI to get a grasp of some of the deeper concepts and/or hidden meanings.

On controlers with the UDS protocol you can select the data you're interested in from a PID list just as you would to with your Autel on a Chrysler or Ford product, not ucb of a difference there,

Other manufacturers have different concepts, but they have concepts!
Once you grasp the base or the point where they start from it's not that hard to see the logic they apply, sometimes it's just us not reading the necessary information....
Other times it's them not providing this necessary informatio....

HTH, a bit
