What is my best way to see if my cam phazers in a 2016 terrain 2.4 vvt engine is getting oil to the phazers why I ask when I first put a wrench on the cam to turn phazers the cam moved and not phazers then sounded like oil cam out then the phazers locked in. Thanks
In my experience, if a phaser fails to lock in it's "home" position, then the issue is typically the phaser itself, but there are a few ways you can prove oil is getting to the phaser and changing the cam timing.
The easiest way, in my opinion is to use the scan tool bidirectional test. Push the button, watch the advance pids and listen to the engine to run differently.
Another real easy way is to unplug the VVT solenoid(s), and apply power and ground to the solenoid with the engine idling. You may hear the phaser click, and you should hear the engine begin to run rough. This proves the oil is making it where it needs to be. You take it a step farther and watch the VVT pids, or even scope the cam and crank sensors while you are doing this to see the cam sensor pattern shift. But really, just jumping the solenoid and hearing the engine change is good enough.
Don't forget about oil pressure. Before you go ahead with any kind of major VVT repair, it is important to verify hot idle oil pressure is in spec.
