Hey everyone, I
I was curious if anyone has ever come across any Hyundai/Kia engines with the 2.0 turbo engines, Which i think we can all agree dont seem to last that long especially if the cusotmer doesnt want to maintain them. Heres my question. Have you ever come across one that smokes/ is burning a tremendous amount of oil that i would consider excessive. and not normal. This customer had the engine replaced once already, so, used engine with 115K on it. The Turbo is the original turbo and wastegate which has 160K on it. I do hear bearing noise coming from the turbo, nothing excessive but it does throw turbo related codes the customer tells me which throws it into limphome mode and it has low power hes stating until he clears the code and then the turbo will boost like normal. When i test drove this car... the turbo wasnt boosting at all... and when i got a mile and a half into my test drive, i hear excessive valvetrain noise and then the car shut down on me at a stop sign. and while i was trying to make the engine burn oil like customer is wanting me to diagnose you could say i was giving the car a run for its money however once it shut down on me, i had it towed back to the shop. at this point. i took the spark plugs out and noticed a lot of oil in only one of the spark plug wells. number one cylinder. no oil on any of the ground straps or any signs of intrustion in the combustion chamber. im doing a valve cover gasket so i can have a look at the camshafts and possibly preform valve adjustments if necessary but i would like to know tall tell signs to look for. so before i drive this again i wanted to take advantage of any of my fellow mechanics out here to see if any of you guys have come across or know of anything off the top of your head for me to look for. I would greatly appreciate your input! ThanksĀ

I have seen a few Kia/Hyundai engines consume oil, but it is usually evident in the spark plugs. They will come in with a pretty persistent misfire and severely fouled plug electrode.

yes, so this one has that as well... however there is a ridiculous amount of oil coating the turbo inlet tube and fins... i honestly dont have any respect for the engineering behind the engines because i have several customers and past experience with the engines locking up at lower than i would predict mileage. but i was just curious if anyone had seen the same thing. i dont see any kind of valve adjustment on these other than just lash. i dont see think its possible for the amount of oil in the turbo tubes to be intrusive from piston/combustion chamber leaks. the compression test i preformed was within specs. the customer ended up coming to get it the other day... and sure enough the customer sent me a video asking me what this ticking noise was after i did a valve cover gasket on it...and i had to respond with "thats not a tick, thats a KNOCK" so catastrophic failure is imminent. i appreciate your guys input. thanks

They are famously junk engines, but to give credit where credit is due, the 3.8l V6 timing belt driven family of engines is really not bad at all.
I have seen several reach 200,000 miles with routine maintenance.
