By posting the year, make, model and engine near the beginning of your help request, followed by the symptoms (no start, high idle, misfire etc.) Along with any prevalent Diagnostic Trouble Codes, aka DTCs, other forum members will be able to help you get to a solution more quickly and easily!
The term XK covers a lot of Jaguar models but generally whining noise comes from a worn bearing in alternator/generator or water pump or power steering pump. On some models it could be a viscous fan issue. However my first action would be to check the level of the power steering fluid and tension of the auxiliary belts.

Agree with Andy 100%. Depending on how difficult it is, you can remove the accessory belt(s) and see if the noise goes away. If it does, investigate the accessories further.
