Sup Danner bros?!

my 2003 4Runner V6 has been running horrible for the past year.  It’s to the point where I can’t get the thing inspected as it won’t pass emissions here in NY.  Bout 18 months ago it started running rough … check engine light came on … it was a p0171 code it was the 1st bank A/F sensor code and the 0171 code that it was running lean … so I brought it in the shop and they said yeah it’s probably the A/F sensor.  Purchased the sensor and had them replace it … ran on for a few days then the problem came back.

fast forward too today … I bought another car in order to get around … but the 4Runner is sidelined in the driveway.  I’ve been trying to diagnose this thing myself .. but I’m a noob and this is confusing.

i have a launch basic obd2 reader … it’s only throwing a P2242 generic code P2242 O2 Sensor Positive Current Control Circuit High Bank 2 Sensor 1

now one whole thing that it would be an open and shut case by just replacing the sensor … but I already replaced the one on the passenger side .. and so this makes me think it’s something else like a vacuum leak. Dirty fuel filter or fuel issue.

some things I’ve visually inspected or saw that it had a valve cover leak on the passenger side pretty bad … and also the pipe coming out is the muffler had been severed so the pipe going to the resonator is not attached to the muffler.

so when I hook up my scan tool .. this thing won’t give up short term and long term fuel trims as it’s running very poorly like almost stalling poorly … and it won’t go into closed loop so I can get the fuel trims and see what’s up.

im not sure where to begin here.  I don’t want to be a parts changer lol so how can I get this thing into closed loop? I also noticed that my air readings were 1.89 to 2 for the maf sensor and it should be double that for a 4.0 liter engine like the 1GR-FE.

thanks Danners

I see that you had bank 1 sensor changed. I don't think it's unreasonable that bank 2 sensor may now also have gone bad.
If it's isn't too much work, you could move the new sensor to bank 2 and see if the problem moves to bank 1 with the suspect sensor

Thank you for the reply! I’m going to remove the bank 2 sensor and check to see if it’s good with a multimeter. Thank you !
