Paul describes two types of potentiometers. Both have voltage sensing circuits inside the pcm. What does the one with the fixed resistor between the 5 volt ref and the signal wire for? Diagnostics? Doesn't the voltage sensing circuit used for diagnostics?

for sensor circuit integrity testing if there is a short to ground you will protect computer from possible overload I think that's what you were asking ?

Thanks for reply. Paul stated that the signal wire in a potentiometer is a sensing circuit only and no path for current flow high impedance without the 5 volt from the fixed resistor. Then without 5 volt circuit is protected.
