I am re using the old sending unit only replacing bad pump unit. My question is, I don't think I can get the old rubber sleeve off the old pump without shredding the sleeve.

New pump did not come with the rubber sleeve. Is the sleeve vital? It does not seem structural at all. Can I leave it off the new pump?

That's new! I've never see an original pump come with one of those rubber sleeves  Anyway, I say skip it and go ahead with your new pump. I've installed many of those without sleeves and never had a problem.

GOD bless you my brothers and sisters.

The sleeve isn't vital i think it was put on to suppress the noise from the fuel pump. You can take a razor and cut it from top to bottom then peel it off and zip tie it to the pump. Hope this helps you.

I would fine with moving on without it.
I also like Gilbert's Suggestion of zip-tying it on the new pump.
Either way.

I think I will move on without it.The rubber seems to be breaking down a little bit, and I don't know if the zip-tie plastic will break down submerged in gasoline.

Thanks guys!

I did not re-use the old sleeve. I was concerned that my el-cheapo zip ties might dissolve while submerged in the gas tank.

I have the new unit in, and all is working fine. This was the second of two fuel pumps we have completed on different vehicles in as many weeks. We did my son's 2000 Mercury Mystique (the subject of another thread, thanks guys for you help on that), and now this Suburban. I am glad to report that both vehicles were diagnosed correctly, (thanks to scannerdanner and you guys I am, hopefully, no longer a parts changer), and seem to have been repaired correctly.

Thanks again guys for all your help!
