2013 chevy malibu 2.5 strange noise when cranking was created by Billwill
2013 malibu 2.5 120k miles , great oil change history and service. Has the noise when starting. No not timing tensioner and/or bad chain noise, no it doesn't go away after a few seconds. It's almost like a honking sound, when cranking, audibly it happens to the cadence of the engine randomly as it's turning over. It makes the engine stumble as delay starting sometimes. Sometimes it still starts just fine. It has a brand new starter, vacuum pump, high pressure fuel pump and oil pressure control valve due to engine codes. There are no more codes but for some reason this strange noise still exists. It makes the sound with the oil cap on and off. No codes present, no misfire, no timing chain noise. Any ideas ?

See if you can record it and post it here. Without actually hearing it, I have no idea what could be honking while the starter is working on your car.

Ha!
It really does honk! That's a new one. Does the noise still persist if you open the throttle during cranking?
Does this engine have secondary air injection?
Weird stuff! Thanks for sharing the video
