Cranks but doesn't start diesel engine was created by scorpiomaniac
Hi Paul,
Great fan of you. Ok straight to the point am Akash kumar from India, haven’t studied any kind of mechanics and am still a student but I love working with machines, so I don’t like going to workshops whatever I can figure I do it my self and thanks to the internet . I got an issue with my car, Which is a diesel engine CRDI. The problem right now is my car cranks but doesn’t start at all. I checked my whole wiring, ECU, ECU Error code just found a TDC/Crank shaft position sensor failure but replaced with new one, done with injectors , fuel pump minor repairs, fuel pump pressure reads fine, all other sensors are good to go, got enough diesel, all diesel lines are clear, no damages to any kind of wiring or harness. Now I have done as much as I can, still am not able to start my vehicle, it just cranks and throws out some smoke but all the way it doesn’t want to start at all. I have also reported to the breakdown assistance team, they came and took a look but still they were even able to figure what the actual problem is. So my last hope is in you so I have watched all of the videos you uploaded and I think you would be able to help me figure this thing out. And also some more information about the vehicle is that it had met with an accident about 3 years ago, it was submitted to the authorised service centre and when I got the final bill it was about 5Lakhs Indian rupees, so I refused to take it off. I think last month they gave me an offer to take the vehicle out of the showroom for about 1.25Lakhs so I thought it was a good deal and I took it back to my home and I have been doing all the stuffs. Everything’s done and its fine. The only main thing I am confused about it is , It cranks all the time but doesn’t start at all, while using some kind of ignition sprays, it starts, but as soon as the fumes of the spray is left, the engine turns back off all over again.

My SUV is an Indian made SUV and the specs are
Mahindra Scorpio 2010 MicroHybrid Mhwak VLX
2.2L 120HP Turbo Charged Diesel Engine
With CRDI (BOSCH)
Done about 78000km

The vast majority of us here will never have seen the Mahindra's engine as the Mahindra we see in Europe and the the few that have started to be sold in the USA have Peugeot engines. ISTR that it may be a continuation of an advanced new Rover design that was due for release before Rover folded in 2003.

Normally with a crank no-start on a common rail diesel after a code scan I would do a low-tech injector leak back test before doing anything else but in this case I suspect that isn't going to be productive. Having a workshop full of kit my next move would be to connect a scope and look at the injectors, cam & crank sensors and high and low pressure fuel pressure sensors, but using more basic tools it comes down to multimeter checks. A common cause of no starts on common rail diesels is cam sensor failures, all the sensors on diesels have to endure more vibration than petrol engines --- the cam and crank sensors are both likely to be 3 wire Hall-Effect sensors so use a volt meter check powers and grounds and see if there is a pulse on the signal wire when cranking.
Although you say the fuel pressure is okay the pressure from scan data can mislead on both the high ( fuel rail) and the low pressure side of the fuel system and both will cause a cranking no start. Failures of the fuel rail pressure sensor are no unknown on the Bosch common rail system on BMW diesels. With the ignition key on after the glow plugs have operated I would expect to see around 1.4 volts from the output pin on the fuel rail high pressure sensor, this should increase to over 2.5 when the engine is cranked.
