How do you determine if the sensor is bad or if there is damage or debris in the hub. I got burned by this a couple months ago and don't want it to happen again.

It was a 2011 volt. ABS light was on. I drove it and graphed all 4 wheel speeds and the front right wheel was dropping out a lot and was a little irratic.

I replaced the sensor and it didn't fix it. The hub did though.

I remember feeling confident with the sensor after I had it out of the car and tested the resistance against the new one and it was either open or out of range, I can't remember which.

Maybe pull the sensor out and spin the hub while looking in the hole for a problem?

Opinions may differ but on hubs with sensor in it we always replace hub assembly when there are dead sensors or debris issue as the cost of the sensor installed doesn't give as much value to the customer vs replacing the assembly that may soon fail , in the case of external sensors just the sensor is replaced unless the tone ring or magnet strip is broken

Sorry you got bit on that one, sir. :( Like Ben was saying, did this Volt have the sensor installed into the hub bearing? Or into the knuckle? Also, what resistance readings did you find? 'Cause I'm pretty sure that Volt uses digital sensors and not VR.

Newer GM's have the sensor tone ring glued to the back of the hub, and like to crack/flake away all the time. Not sure how this Volt is built, but I'd wager that's what happened.

FWIW, I've had luck catching damaged tone wheels with the scope on the signal wire. I took this waveform off the right rear sensor on a 2012 Volt. The cracked section comes around at regular intervals:

I agree with Tyler. On the 11 volt the tone ring is exposed & we have seen a lot of that style ring failing from being chipped or even debris sticking to it. Have had some that I got away with cleaning without removing just don't get a magnet near the ring or it will wipe it.
