GM starter diagnosis was created by MrEquivocal82
Good morning everyone!  This past week I had a 14 Silverado 5.3L in my bay at work that was an intermittent click no crank.  I voltage dropped both the positive and ground sides of the circuit and found less than .5v on both.  According to SI, this was good.  I was wondering, once I changed the starter out, I voltage dropped across the starter from B+ to ground and saw 9.8v.  I cleaned the ground cable and block right next to starter and it improved to 10.1v.  Is this normal for a good starter circuit?  I did notice the ground strap on the other side of the engine was a little corroded but not terrible.  I was just under the impression that the load should drop all the source voltage upon operation, and I did not witness that during this diag.  Any help would be very much appreciated.  Thanks again!

Here is a video that might help you.

A comprehensive starting system check will include voltage/voltage drop measurements at the following points of interest:

battery voltage under load

voltage drop between battery B+ and starter B+ under load

voltage drop across solenoid between starter B+ and starter positive o the actual motor, under load. (also posible to measure voltage at the starter + terminal to the motor)

voltage drop between starter housing and B-, again under load

Voltage measurement at the starter S terminal, under load.

A scope is ideal for these measurements but you can take each and every measurement with a voltmeter as well.

An expert is someone who knows each time more on each time less, until he finally knows absolutely everything about absolutely nothing.

Thank you for your replies! I truly appreciate your time. I did perform a battery test as well and it passed. I was just hoping to find out what the average voltage drop across a starter is, one that is good? Is 10.1v normal?
