I got this Tahoe with lifter noise and misfire lose of power. I replaced the lifters noise and misfire is gone but i still have lose of power and engine pings. When i step the gas pedal truck pings and no power i hear the timing chain slapping . The truck has 230,000 miles what should i check next?
Thank you for your help.

I would probably look at the timing if you suspect the tensioner is loose. Other things that could cause detonation are very old gas if the truck was sitting or incorrect spark plugs heat range.

Are there any codes?

Tutti57 thank you for your quick respond, the truck came in with misfire codes engine light flashing. After the repair I get no codes and the truck was sitting for a long time but with almost no gas. I had to put gas in the truck to start it , I didn't put platinum spark plugs should I change them?

God bless you my brotherts and sisters.
Today I put patinum plugs and it seems to run a little better but it still bougs. The engine pinging is a lot less i still get no engine codes. Tomorrow I think I will take off the timing cover and see if i have slack on the chain. All suggestions welcomed.
Thank you all for your help.

OK today was a good day I hooked up the scanner and found a pending code p0101. The engine light was not on, I looked up the code and it's a maf code. I then look at the scanner danner forum you tube videos did some test ok just checked for 5v and ground then cleaned test drove and same thing. I read again what the code is and it said air flow restriction bla bla bla. I took of the air filter and it was dirty don't think it's been changed, an other thing that came to mined was he was diving with misfires. Now i'm thinking burnt cat's exhaust plugged up i take off both up stream 02 sensors and i now have power. I'm to let the customer know and see what he wants to do.
Thank you for your help.

Gilbert! Great to see you, sir. :cheer:

Could you watch some data during a test drive. Calculated Load at WOT through first gear is what I'm looking for. Should go to at least 90% on that truck. Watch the upstream O2's at the same time, if possible.

For reference, there was another thread recently about a Chevy truck with a plugged cat. It's got some known good and known bad data captures included. ;-)

I can provide some more data from a known good 2002 5.3L Tahoe with 340k on it if you want to compare:)

edit: attached snapon movies, you can use ShopStream on a PC to pick them apart.

Dbadge thank you very much but his morning it went to the muffler shop and took off the cat's they where plugged solid so I can call this a fix.
Hey Tyler it's good to hear from you brother I took the truck to muffler shop before I read your response sorry brother.
But at wide open throttle I would maybe go 10 miles per hour , I work alone and it's hard to drive and look at Sanner so I don't do much of that. Thank you for letting me know about the other thread .

No worries, sir! Glad to hear its a fix.

That P0101 was kinda misleading... GM code set criteria isn't always the best. :silly:
