Has anyone had any experience with MSD ignition systems? I have been asked to scope ignition setups on a racecar with a MSD ignition system in it. The car runs fine, the owner just wants to record different events in the car for monitoring purposes. I'm thinking of secondary ignition and current ramp type test. I have a Snap on Verus Pro with AES add-ons for ignition. I just want to make sure that I don't blow my scope on a higher CD type system. Thanks for you input.
Secondary ignition voltage is really determined by the the spark gap(s) and the conditions within the cylinder so as long as the these are in a sensible range and plug wires are in good order there is no way you are going to see enough KV to damage the scope. The same goes for primary current. If you do a search on Google images should turn up known good waveforms or this system.
