I have 03 Altima 3.5 that customer says has had a intermediate stall as well as an intermediate no start for a very long time. The last time it stalled it would not start back. It was brought to me with a burned up starter and fouled plugs. After replacing the starter and plugs I pulled P1122 and P1126 ETC codes. I don't believe these would cause a no start. I only have a two channel scope so I scoped bank 1 cmp with ckp, then bank 2 cmp with ckp, and then bank 1 cmp with bank 2 cmp. The correlation all looks good. I did notice the ckp would glitch out often. I replaced the ckp and it fixed the glitch but still no start. I have good fuel pressure, good spark, injector pulse, fuel sample looks good, relative compression looks good, no NATS codes, but still no start. One thing I have to question id when I turn the key on the scope shows 12v on cmp and ckp sensors but when I crank it over the only max out at 10.4v. Is this normal and any guidance or experience on these engine with similar issues? Thanks a lot.

Only thing I can think at the moment is that battery voltage drops during cranking.

Are you sure the cam crank correlation is correct?
What is the MAF doing?
Nissan does not have a back up strategy so loss or odd MAF signal will result in no start.

93Rubie is right about the MAF. Nissan relies heavily on the MAF, and is pretty much out to sea without it. :silly: What's the cranking injection pulse width?
My other thought is that the throttle is stuck closed, and not allowing the engine to breathe. With this year, it's probably all coked up, too. You could try creating a large vacuum leak, and see if it tries to start and idle then. If that improves things, then dig deeper into the throttle.

Did you ask the customer if they had cranked for a very long time? Sounds like it. Have you checked the fuel/ignition system from the ECM? I have seen circuitry fail without blowing a fuse. A jeep rubicon was hard to start, kept blowing coil packs, ran on 4 cylinders, until I checked up to the ECM and there it was a black burn spot on the board. Also Tyler is right, how dirty is the air/vacuum system?

The problem was a voltage drop inside the IPDM. The ETC relay would energize with key on but would turn off on cranking. Relay is non serviceable. Used IPDM took care of it.
