1997 Mazda Astina 180SE. Hi there. The car use to run fine. Now it starts up when its cold and runs for about 30 minutes then just cuts out. When you try start it again it just turns. Check Air flow meter. Was dirty but cleaned it. Still didn't start. Checked for spark and found there was no spark. I took the distributor in to get check and tested fine with no problems. Put back in car and started and ran for about another 30 minutes and just cut out again. Check spark and again no spark. If you leave the car for a couple of hours and try star it will start but eventually cut out again. The diagnostics unit I got does not fit this year model so cant check for any faults on the diagnostics machine. Please if any advice what I could look at would help.

Your description suggests a heat related problem. ... As you do not have spark you might want to check crank/cam signals. If u don't have a scope you always could watch out for rpm at the tachometer while cranking

A heat related failure on the coil points (1) a coil failure (2) a position sensor failure (2) 12v Supply failure

If you have no spark after 30 minutes when it cuts out check you have battery voltage at the B+ side of the coil, if you don't have 12v at the coil look to an ignition relay problem.
if you still have at least 12v then look to either the ignition position sensor or the coil or ignition module. Tthe next stage is to check if the control side of the coil is getting pulsed on using a test light this might no be easy on a Mazda. If you have no pulse on the control side then it must be either the ignition module
