What tha...? Definitely try what cheryl suggested.

Just to make sure I understand - the pump is in the tank, and the tank is partially lifted, but not fully installed in the car?

only other test id do is with the module unplugged and pump. hook your meter up to pins 3 and 10 on the continuity setting you shouldnt see any. flex/bend the harness if you get continuity the wires are touching in a spot in the harnesss

Pump is in the tank, tank is lifted, strapped in loosely but not super tight. Electrical connector, fuel line, and filler neck connected, EVAP lines not connected. Just came in from doing the test as Cheryl suggested. Test light stayed lit...

Well, I might have finally fixed it. Just gave it a good old-fashioned smack with the key on and it quieted right down and pressure went to a more acceptable range. I'll take another look tomorrow when it's light out.

Another update: The pump is back to running constantly, or maybe it's just not running at all. Smacking it was only temporary I guess. Something's wrong with that inner motor, and I don't know if it can be returned to Delphi or Advance, where I ordered it from.

Would you indulge me? I see that you have the tank partially installed with the straps... Is there a way you can remove the straps and still keep the tank hooked up?

I can't imagine why, but I'm wondering if the pump is somehow grounding to the tank, which is then finding a ground through the straps. It's a long shot, but it may explain why the pump behaved correctly when we tried it earlier, but acts up once the tank comes into play.

I'll give it a try since it's coming down anyway and the pump's going back to Advance. Upthread I mentioned that I smacked the bottom of the tank and it briefly worked. It made me think that the motor inside is seized or something. I tried it again this afternoon and it was back to acting up.

Thanks! I'm wondering if, when your beating on the tank, you're actually taking the (inadvertent) ground away from the pump. Again, could be way off. :silly:

I think you're onto something. This is really weird. I'm going to shoot a quick video.

YES. :woohoo: This is exactly what I was thinking about! Awesome video, sir.

The pump is definitely shorted to ground through its mounting onto the tank. The tank itself shouldn't be a ground path for ANYTHING, so messing with the straps should make zero difference to this pump. Your straps are fine, no worries there.

I strongly suspect this pump is either wrong for this application, or defective. If you have the old pump around, you could swap it in and try it? But I suspect it'll come down to getting another pump from the parts store.

To prove it, unplug the pump, and connect your ohm meter between the tank itself and either pump wire (brown/pink or pink/black). Any reading other than OL is a problem.

I actually went and got another new pump, which was just off-camera. It should be closer to the old Airtex I took out. The Delphi will probably go back tomorrow. Had to call and complain to the manager and all that...It's been quite the experience. In 14 years I've had that car, I've never had any weird electrical issues. I will not be buying anything from Delphi again.

Put the new pump in, it seems to work fine. Primes nicely, good pressure.

Went to start her up, it made some horrible shuddering noises, and stalled.

Yeah, I forgot to hook back up a vacuum hose to the upper intake. It's running now, but hesitating at throttle. Maybe MAF. Pulled a P0113 code. Engine just sounds...different. May be just that I lived with how it used to sound for so long. Maybe I just worry too much.

And yep, it is ALWAYS something with me. Besides the car, the keyboard in my laptop is going haywire, and I just replaced that in April.

Like I said, story of my life...

P0113 is IAT Circuit High... No offense meant, but is the MAF plugged in?

Ford's code set criteria for the MAF is pretty generous, and won't always code right away if unplugged.
