I have a 09 toyota matrix with a code p0012 relating to the vvt solenoid my main question is there a way to put a scope to test solenoid or how would you check them on these toyotas cause i cant find a desired or an actual pid on my bidirectional scanner

There are a couple of things you can try. First, I'd make sure it has oil in it. Then depending on accessability, you could unplug the solenoid connector and do an ohm test at the component and just see if it's open internally. You could pull the solendoid out and put power and ground to it to see if it's operates that way. You could use a scope to see if it is getting commands from the computer to operate, which may require codes to be cleared, a certain engine temp be reached, and/or a load (like power braking) be put on it. You could also see if the solenoid is moving with a scope. Is there a duty cycle % pid or cam position that you could watch while doing any of the tests mentioned above too?

It would be good to confirm that the cam sensor is working, unless there would be another code for that.  If it's a three wire sensor, make sure it has 5v, ground, and signal.
