2006 Hyundai elantra p0011 and p0016 was created by Jose22
Hello
Like the title says
Im trying to diagnose those codes on my 2006 elantra
and i really appreciate any help i can get

Im just a backyard mechanic but i usually work o or own cars
I have a few basic tools like wrenches sockets multimeter oscilloscope etc

While doing some research on my problem it points to a few parts/components

1-variable oil valve actuator (vvt)
2-timing off
3-camshaft sensor
4-crankshaft sensor
5-Or wiring issues on those components

My main question right now to avoid any damage to engine

is there any way to chech if timing belt jumped a tooth without taking off the timing cover?
Maybe a relative compression test?
What about turning engine by hand?
Any other way?
Thank you

If you have a two or four channel oscilloscope, absolutely. Hyundai service information provides a known good cam/crank relationship:

But, while I love scoping stuff as much as the next person, in this case it might be easier just to visually inspect the belt. ;) The upper timing cover comes off with four 10mm bolts. Turn the crank clockwise until the crank balancer mark lines up with the indicator on the timing cover:

Then, use a mirror to inspect the camshaft alignment. There's a mark on the cylinder head that should be visible through the hole in the camshaft sprocket:

If you can't get the marks to line up, the belt is out of time. If the marks are in time, but P0016 resets quickly, then there's something wrong with the timing chain or the VVT sprocket.

Maybe a relative compression test?

Possibly? It'd rely on the ignition timing being out compared to cylinder TDC in order to show you anything. Since this is a waste spark engine, the coil firing is likely based on the crank signal alone (or heavily reliant on it). That means the ignition timing may still be dead on time even with a valve timing problem.

Thank you guys
the first thing i tried before reading your answers was to test and clean the vvt solenoid/actuator since it was the fastest and easiest thing to do
( i like fast and easy :P )

Then i test drive the car and everything seems and feels good
o2 sensors fuel trims and the rest of obd readings seems good

I still want to take a look at the timing belt and try to scope the camshaft and crankshaft sensors correlation just to be 100% sure
but first i have to buy more probes to do that

By the way "tyler" i know you provided good information with pictures
but do you happen to have the actual waveform file to see it with my pico software ?
