1989 F150 4.9L EFI, cranks, has spark, good fuel pressure, but wont start
Hi all,
I have an '89 F150 with the 4.9L EFI, EEC-IV, 5 Speed, that I rebuilt with my son. Pulled the whole engine out and rebuilt it. The only mod I did was to put a mild Compcam cam in it.
I had it running briefly after the rebuild but quickly discovered (within 1-2 minutes) after it was running that i had no oil pressure. I found that issue (missed an oil galley plug on the rebuild) and put it all back together again. Since then it wont start, but I have spark, it cranks, I checked the fuel pressure and it is at about 50 psi. I have watched a bunch of SD's youtube videos and did some checks based on those videos. I saw in one of his videos that he said that the tach should NOT move or bounce (which is what I am seeing) while you are cranking the engine and if it is then that means something... I can't find that video now and so my first question is what does that mean on this truck? Bad distributor pickup? Or bad ICM? Any help would be appreciated by this shade tree mechanic. My other though is that the computer/ECM is bad maybe? If so, how to diagnose that? I am also wondering how to determine what the timing should be set at with this new cam. I have adjusted it +/- 30 degrees probably, trying to get it to start, but I couldn't get it to light up.
Thanks in advance.
