Yesterday my 2014 dodge grand caravan 3.6L had a battery light come on and a burning smell. Popped the hood and the alternator was cooking. KOER Voltage at battery 11.7v. Got the old one off, got it tested, and failed. Installed a new ultima reman, tested voltage again koer at the battery 14.7v then i shut her down. Put everything back together, went to take on test drive heard a weird noise under the hood over by the alternator sound disappeared tested voltage at battery again and its reading 12.3v.
From what i researched; aftermarket alternators are hit and miss, clutch could be stuck, i could have a ecm/tipm problem, bad ground/broken wire.
Is there any tests i can perform at the b+ or the field wires to verify i dont have a bad ecm. In this case i pray its just low quality reman parts.
Ultima says it all for me. I would say 70% of the Ultima alternators I've installed this year either didn't work right out of the box, or came back very shortly not charging. One even lit on fire.
Haha you called it. Armature and clutch was defective. Installed another alternator new instead of remanufactured and no issues at all strong 14.5v. man i swear some of these reman companies. The only one ive ever had good luck with is genco/bbb.
