My son has a X-PRO 110cc ATV Quads ATV Quad ATVs 4 Wheeler that I believe the starter solenoid went out on. I see the hot wire from the + of the battery dishing out 12v, but when I try to start it, the solenoid clicks but does nothing else.
I have a wire going to the start switch and another wire going to the engine.
I have a few questions on using my power probe 3.
Can I leave the battery connected to the engine as it needs to be?
Can I connect the tip of the power probe to the wire that goes from the starter solenoid to the engine and give it positive power to try to start without anything else getting fried( since if it would be okay to leave the battery connected as it).
I bought this tool to work on my 2000 Ranger and mainly just used it to test relays and fuses, test grounds. I never actually used the supplying power button. I am just wanting to be cautious because I know how dangerous this tool can be.
Seeing battery voltage on a terminnal with no load on it is no guarantee you have a good connection. Also seeing 12v from a battery is no guarantee it is in good shape as a battery with dead cell can show seeingly normal voltage until it is put under heavy load when it will instantly drop to 6v.
For a By-pass test os the switch and wiring You can use your power probe to go from batery + to the S terminnal of the starter solenoid but not the main battery terminnals --- just be 100% sure the transmission is in neutral.
To test jump the bigger main terminnals most use use a fairly heavy duty screwdriver expect major SPARKS ! A gain make 100% sure transmission is i neutral.
With this type of issue I would do a visual and hand check for tightness of battery terminnals and solenoid connectioins before doing the electrical tests.
Paul made a really good Youtube video on this type of no start on Caleb's Jeep
