Subject vehicle: ABS light will sporadically illuminate; connected scan tool, and it shows 4 wheel speed sensors. The only problem is the 2005 Jeep Liberty has two front wheel speed sensors, and a single (2 wire) sensor on the rear differential. How in the world is the scan tool showing four wheel speed sensors?
Theory of operation in Mitchell1 says (4 wheel speed sensors), but the schematic shows a single sensor on the rear differential. I have inspected the vehicle and confirmed that there are no independent wheel speed sensors on the rear wheels.
Well, I replaced the wheel speed sensor on the rear differential, and it was dead right out of the box ... no signal at all. So I installed the old one (it was glitching out), and I got a signal again. On the scan tool, the rear differential sensor shows up as the left rear and right rear wheel speed sensors even though there is only one sensor. If I unplug it, I lose left and right wheel speed sensor indications.
