My own diesel got a tankful of rather ropey supermarket diesel and was making more noise than a troop of monkeys playing drums. A bit of research showed the the additive used by the oil companies when they want to boost Cetane number is a chemical 2-Ethyl-Hexyl Nitrate (2-EHN) which is used in most commercial Cetane boosters
99% pure 2-EHN is available fairly cheaply on eBay so I ordered some. Using a 1:750 ratio the results are very noticeable after 10 or so miles to get the doped diesel through the system the engine is much quieter runs much sweeter pulling from very low rpm in top two gears.
