A fairy large (74ah) 2 year old top quality Bosch S5 Silver battery was flattened to less than 50% over 3 hours then recharged at an intial rate of 20 amps after just under 3 hours the charge rate fell to about 5 amps and the car was out back into service
From new the battery always showed a slightly low rest voltage 12.5 to 12.6v, now after this deep discharge and 2 days in service the rest voltage is a more normal 12.7 to 12.8 volts.

That is interesting. We sell Bosch batteries and they're one of the few things we seem to sell that never give trouble though. All too rare these days fitting dependable parts it seems.

Yes it pays to buy a premium battery.
Bosch batteries are made by the Varta division of Bosch --- they made the batteries used in U-Boats in both World Wars.
The other battery brand I rate is Exide

I deal with a LOT of batteries.
The best batteries I have ever used are Duracell. I don't know who manufactures them, but we used to burn through a pair of 12v batteries a year in the front end loader. I've had the same pair in there now since February 2014.

We sell a ton of used batteries, got a charging station all set up. The Duracell batteries that come in the junk cars usually come right back after a trickle charge.
The AAA car batteries are pretty reliable too. Again, I never looked into who makes the batteries for AAA either.

Yes battery quality makes huge difference there is a good UK web based battery seller that I have had very good experiences with Tayna Batteries who can supply virtually any make type and grade of battery very quickly. Their website is a very useful source information on battery , amp hours and dimensions and alternative fittment options

When I need a battery for my or my wife's car, I use Batteries Plus.
Which should say a lot considering I can have all the free used car batteries I want.

Some things should just be bought new.
