No wait, that is not they saying! It is necessity is the mother of invention! Anyhow, the foam inside my spark plug sockets has long since perished. Typically I can use a short length of hose slipped over the plug's top to remove/insert one, for the small number of plugs I change this works fine. Yesterday I could not manage to slip the hose over the plugs on the rear bank of a transverse mounted V6 and then stumbled upon the trick of slipping my hose through the top of the socket and lowering the hose/socket into the hole. The socket guides the hose to the top of the plug and you can remove and start the plug this way.
