Hey guys, first I just want to say that I’m not by any means a professional or a guy that does this stuff on a day to day basis. Truth is I’m just curious and interested in learning about this stuff. I’m basically looking for a budget scan tool that I can run bidirectional tests and do a lot more in depth than my Bluetooth iPhone scanner which really only reads codes and gives sketchy live data. My budget is around $800 but I’d like to spend less and I don’t have or see myself having any cars newer than a 2017 for quite some time. I’m a bottom feeder, I buy everything used. So the scan tool would be just for me to work on my own cars. I have mostly domestic but I’m looking at buying a Mazda 3 soon. I’ve been seeing some Solus pro scanners in working condition go forsale for around $550, one in particular had the latest software update available which I think is 17.2 so that should cover up to around 2016 mode years? I figure I’d be better off buying someone’s old snap on scanner than a new off brand scan tool that doesn’t give as accurate data readings? Does It sound like I’m on the right thinking here for a DIY’er? Is there any other reliable used scanners that i should be looking for besides the Solus pro that would be good for my situation? Anything to look out for when buying a used scanner?

The Solus Pro is a good tool. As long as the battery is still good, and it comes with all the personality keys, it will probably be more tool than you need.
There's even a training series specific to that tool in the Premium section of the site.

Thanks Noah for the info about the premium coverage on this tool. I did not know that. I’ve found a few with bad batteries but It was my understanding that you can still use the tool as long as you run It either off the obdii port or with a power adapter (12vdc or 120vac)?

You are correct sir! I forgot that the tool can be powered by the days link connector. It's been a while since I owned one...
