I have a procedure I use to identify a distributor cap crossfire situation that I would like to share and get opinions on whether or not it's a good method. I mark the harmonic balancer counter clockwise on a clockwise rotation engine with half as many numbers as cylinders. These numbers are spaced evenly around the balancer. I then run the engine while it is misfiring and place my timing light on the plug wires one at a time and look for the correct number respective to the firing order. The only variable I that could affect this is the possibility that a cylinder could be crossfiring with its companion cylinder. Tell me what you think ( better way, more variables, ect. )
