Would a pico one channel scope be a good scope for a home mechanic on a budget

I think it'd be fine? Any scope is better than no scope.

BUT, for automotive applications, I feel that two channels are minimum. Any relative compression, cam/crank, current ramps + trigger, in-cylinder or pressure pulse testing will require at least two. With one, you're severely limited, even from a home mechanic stance.

If you're gonna go Pico, I'd step up to the two channel model. OR consider something like a used Vantage Ultra.

To be honest, if you're gonna get a one channel scope, you'd be better served with a Uscope. No need for laptop and it won't break the bank. Check them out at AESWaves.
