I got a pick up stick and it worked on my nissan sentra but it doesn't work on some other cars. Is this tool limited to what it can be used on?

Some ignition coils are just better shielded than others. Honda coils come to mind, they usually don't produce a good waveform with an inductive secondary probe but most from American brands work just fine. It's hit or miss, learn as you go.

The best way I know of to obtain a secondary waveform on a well insulated ignition coil is to add a spark plug wire between the ignition coil and the spark plug.
I keep a handful of Chevy LS style plug wires for spark checking ignition coil cassettes like are equipped on some GM 4-cylinder engines. This way you can clamp right on the wire of the cylinder you want to scope.
